Need for protection of IP by students in an institutional setting

The Washington Science & Engineering Fair will feature leading patent attorney Paul R. Juhasz of Juhasz Burge, PC to speak on What High School Innovators in an Institutional Setting Need to Know about Intellectual Property at Bremerton High School in Bremerton, Washington on March 29, 2025.

Juhasz will present the talk to the science and engineering fair finalists. The statewide event is a educational non-profit organization affiliated with many local, regional and national organizations. Awards are sponsored by private and public entities, including the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, Association for Women Geoscientists, The Broadcom Foundation, NASA Langely Research Center, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The Pacific Science Center, Regeneron, Thermo Fisher Scientific, U.S. Air Force, Washington State University, and The Yale Science & Engineering Association, among many others.

Because institutions of higher learning are seeking to claim more ownership in the innovation and artistry of students who attend their institutions, protecting the independent creation of IP by a student in an institutional setting is an issue garnering the attention of innovators and institutions alike.

In his talk titled “What?, Who?, Wherein? How? What High School Innovators in an Institutional Setting Need to Know about ‘What is’ IP?, ‘Who is’ the Inventor/Creator? ‘Wherein lies Ownership?’, and ‘How Tos’ of Protection,” Juhasz provides a high-level overview of “What is” IP and “Who is” the Inventor/Creator. He addresses questions about “Wherein lies” Ownership and describes the “How Tos” of Protection.” Juhasz develops a number of scenarios describing who owns the IP in the case of student innovation developed on or using the resources of an institution, such as development of an invention in a dorm room using the resources of the college or university.

This is the 68th annual Washington Science & Engineering Fair to be held. Students submit their projects through local science fairs across the state. More information about the Washington Science & Engineering Fair can be obtained at their website, wssef.org.
